Schoolwide Chidon Tournament

Elana Max (3rd place), Noam Traeger (2nd place), and Yishai Kaufman (1st place) with their prizes

On November eleventh, every grade, boys and girls, competed as a class in a Chidon tournament about the “Hilchot Shabbat”- laws of Shabbos. This was an exciting event put together by the HANC Student Life for the Shabbos project, an initiative with the intent of joining together Jews from all over the world in celebrating Shabbos.

Each class was given an 18 page packet with many laws of Shabbos. Some of the laws included were more commonly known; however, there were also many that were harder to memorize which very few people had even heard about! The teachers went over the packets, going over the laws in depth and engaging the students with these halachot that they may not have been aware of before. At the end of the day, students were told to take the packets home and study the information to prepare for the competition the following day. During third period that Friday morning, every class logged into the schoolwide zoom and elected someone to enter the answers in the Kahoot for the class. As a class, the students tried to answer the questions as fast as they could. Each question had four options to choose from. The faster they chose the correct answer, the more points they would earn. The competition was intense, and after every round a leaderboard was shown, encouraging the classes to stay on top.

At the end of the kahoot (a quiz-based learning platform), the top three classes chose a student to be representative and compete in front of the school for first, second, and third place. The chosen representatives were Elana Max 25’, Noam Traeger 25’, and Yishai Kaufman 23’. The whole school had a great time watching the event, with the competition being paused every few questions for fun games like “can you recognize the food with just taste?”

During the competition section, the three representatives had to quickly buzz-in to answer the question that appeared on the slide show, and if they got it right they would be awarded a point. The person with the most points at the end of the game would be the winner!

In the end, Yishai placed first, Noam in second, and Elana in third. Each student put up a great fight and buzzed in with the correct answer many times! Awesome prizes such as pretzels and sefarim were given out to all three representatives, and their classes got prizes as well with a pizza party for 2nd and 3rd place, and bagels with sides for 1st. This competition had everyone cheering- whether they were winning or not, everybody had fun!
