HANC Takes On The Ice Rink

On Tuesday January 31, HANC High School took the students, along with faculty chaperones, to a local and extraordinary ice skating rink. Both the faculty and the students were nervous before going on the trip because it was, honestly, extremely cold outside and throughout the morning it was raining, snowing, and even hailing. But despite the weather conditions, the trip turned out to be an astounding success.

HANC split the four grades into two separate groups, each departing at different times, so everyone would be able to enjoy the ice skating to its fullest extent. The first group that left for the rink were the juniors and seniors. The buses left before the start of the second period. Upon arrival at the rink, those who were skating traded in their shoes for skates, excited to get onto the ice. Thankfully the rain and snow began to subside, so the skating was safe and, with big smiles, the students got out onto the ice to have some fun skating, playing games, and hanging out with friends, along with the faculty.

The students especially enjoyed the fun interactions with faculty outside of the pressures of academic work. Mr. Smus, Rabbi Freidler, Mr. Masso, Ms. Schiano, and Morah Fink (who brought her daughters Perry and Raisel) all participated and shared in the excitement and joy. Even those who were not skating had fun, enjoying taking pictures of their friends, relaxing inside (where it was warm), talking and laughing. Mr. Smus, who does not ice skate, loved hanging out with them and everyone embraced a sense of warmth (even in the cold) and community.

For the second trip the freshman and sophomores traveled to the rink and the faculty that came—smiles all—were Ms. Schiano, Mr. Masso, Rabbi Friedler, Rabbi Mezei, Morah Fink, and Ms. Zucker. The youngsters, maybe even more so than the older students, had a blast that will live long in their memories. Even before the event had ended, you could hear many HANC kids saying that they “can’t wait for the next ice skating trip next year!”
