Krafting for Kindness

Last year, freshman Zahava Spiser went through a difficult experience that led her to encounter how wonderful Cohen’s Children’s Hospital is. Now recuperated, she wanted to do something special to show how important her experience at the hospital was for her.

One of the first things that came to her mind was her Bat Mitzvah Chesed project, where she had gone as an ambassador to schools and helped students decorate headbands for sick children. She remembered how much people had enjoyed not just the good deed, but the craft involved in the activity too. So, she thought to herself, why not combine the two ideas into a school club?

Thus Krafting for Kindness was born. She created an informative board for the club fair and was enthusiastic when we spoke with her about just how many HANC students loved the idea and wanted to help. The first project involved creating beautiful no-sew pillows to sell at school, with all proceeds going to none other than Cohen’s Children’s Hospital.

Zahava, with the help of fellow co-chairs Elana Max 25’ and Chava Greenstein 25’, found her inner leader as she began to run meetings. At first, it seemed hard to organize the tasks and members, and it was quite the daunting task. Ultimately, though, students from all four grades came together to help cut, fringe, and tie pillows together.

The pillows were sold on Chanukah so that students could buy them not only to help support the club and hospital, but also as gifts for friends or family. Over six hundred dollars were raised for Cohen’s from this round of fundraising alone. While the club as a whole helped in all aspects, from creating the pillows to running the sales, it was Zahava and her friends who had the determination to make it all run like clockwork. Not too shabby for their first semester of high school!

After a brief hiatus, this year the club made its comeback, yet again raising an impressive amount of money for the hospital. Everyone looks forward to seeing how this club can positively impact the world next!
