This past week, HANC students had the opportunity to pack boots for chayalim. On Tuesday, December 19, and Wednesday, December 20th, the upperclassmen boys and girls went on separate trips to do this chesed. To do this, the HANC students went to a warehouse in Freeport that the Young Israel of Holliswood donated for this chesed.
When we arrived at the warehouse, the Young Israel of Holliswood volunteers were there, ready and eager to explain to us how we were supposed to package the boots. They explained to us that we had to take the stuffing out of the boots and then zip-tie the pairs together. After we did that we had to fit over thirteen boots into relatively small duffle bags so they could be shipped to Israel.
Although it was difficult at times, the energy and excitement to help Am Israel filled the small space, with everyone working as a team to pack as many boots as possible into the provided duffel bags. Going into the warehouse, everyone was a bit chilly, but once we got to work, the energy and spirit kept everyone warm. Many girls put on Israeli music to get everyone’s energy up and thriving.
While we were working, the Young Israel of Holliswood organizers made it clear just how meaningful this effort was and how much they wished we could come help again. Overall students packed within 20-70 pairs of boots, and packed all the boots available each day. We returned to school with a sense of having really helped make a difference for Am Israel.
